3.0 out of 5 stars Pocket sizesd Manics, 4 Oct 2000
By A Customer
When it comes to the flux of Manics biogs which have been published these last few years, Jody Thompson's effort sits somewhere in the middle. It's not the definative investigation which encompasses every facet of the bands art and actions, and to it's credit neither does it claim to be. Neither is it, however, of the tawdry quality of some recent publications on the subject, which appear to be no more than misleading phantasms of the truth.

Thompson's book is a small, consise reading of the basic truths and facts of the Manics career. There is little conjecture or hypothesis, which when dealing with the Manics can be construed as a great advantage. The loudest trumpet Thompson can blow in her favour, is that she was present at the infamous incident in Norwich, when Richey Edwards carved '4 Real' into his arm. Thompson helped bandage the wound and accompanied the band to the hospital, and to her credit she doesn't surround the incident with hyperbole.

The book is colourful, and filled with glossy photographs of the band from throughout their career, and this alone will reccomend it to many fans, after all the Manics are a very vissual band. Also since the book is pocketsized, it can slip neatly into the school bag, making it the perfect introductory pressie for al starter Manics fans!

2.0 out of 5 stars flawed but good pics, 20 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This is a book that would probably have excited me more (although not a lot more) if i hadn't have already read the masterpiece "Everything" by Simon Price. She offers no real insight and also makes a couple of glaringly inaccurate mistakes, such as the miner's strike was in 1986. Badly researched and often cliched, the only saving grace of an otherwise disappointing read is the way she tackles how the manics needn't only be useful for soundtracking a teenagers deppression along with a bottle of vodka, a razor and "Die in the summertime" and can instead offer you some of the most uplifting and socially important music there is. Of course the pictures are great but to judge a book on this would be shallow. Buy it if you must but i strongly urge you to the wonderful Simon Price.
