Product Description

Product Description

This new series of walking guides is unique, with highly detailed hand-drawn trail maps featuring the kind of information not normally found on maps -- walking times, gradients, important directions, hotels, restaurants, and points of interest. As one reviewer put it, the maps are "user-friendly, with route-finding tips scribbled onto the map itself. Gradients are indicated by arrows -- great if you don't know contours from condors." Britain's network of long-distance trails enables walkers to explore some of the finest landscapes in the country's best walking areas. Each book includes: -- Planning and background information -- Practical information -- places to stay, places to eat, and transport information -- Itineraries -- day trips or the full 1-2 week route -- Trail guide -- Maps -- at a scale of 1:19,500 these are the most detailed available -- 16pp of color photographs Scotland's best-known long distance footpath passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Britain. From the outskirts of Glasgow it winds for 95 miles along the wooded banks of Loch Lomond across the wilderness of Rannoch Moor over the mountains above Glencoe to a dramatic finish at the foot of Britain's highest peak -- Ben Nevis.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the information you need, 15 May 2004
By John Clarke (Shropshire, England) - See all my reviews
I've never been that fond of guide books but this one served me very well on my recent West Highland Way walk.

I admit to loving Ordnance Survey maps but for the first time this guide book was all I used and needed (I carried some OS maps but they were never looked at). The route guide and maps were excellent, ensuring that I was always confident of being on the correct path. Useful information was provided on each village/town visited, including services (post offices, shops, public transport etc), where to stay (B & B, hotels, campsites) and where to eat.

Plenty of useful information for planning your walk, from suggested itineraries to information concerning the weather and precautions to take. Snippets of information concerning wildlife and historical events added to the enjoyment of the walk.

Published 2003 - only once did I find information out of date and that was concerning a campsite that is currently closed. A few phone calls before you depart easily takes care of any such concerns.

If I wrote walking guides, I'd like to think they would turn out like this one. It fits in a coat pocket, weighs about 8oz and although it had some rough use, there was no sign of it falling apart. Congratulations to Trailblazer - a very difficult job well done
