1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, stick with Lonely Planet, 24 Nov 2003
By A Customer
I get tired of always using LP, and thought I'd go for the in-depth trekking guide. However this book just replicates all the usual guide info like, "How to get there" and flora and fauna. But it really doesn't offer much of the trekking. Only 4 regions, one trek in each, and no maps to navigate the area or do a different trek, just daily sketches. No help at all, unless you intend to do exactly one of these 4 treks, and therefore you have no flexibility
Please produce a proper set of maps!! The moroccan maps out there are terrible also. There are so many more trails out there
Please Richard, concentrate on the trekking, and the maps, and we'll do the rest otherwise leave it to lonely planet

Lonely Planet have a 30 page section at the back and it has a better map and more variety of treks than this book or any other info you can find. GO LP - just do a full trekking guide next time!

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost excellent but very frustrating, 26 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I'm torn between raving about this book and slating it. On the plus side, it is well researched and well written and is full of very useful information. But it is so unambitious! The author recommends that trekkers hire a guide and muleteer and assumes that they will do so. (I accept this is sound advice in terms of injecting much needed cash into the local economy but there are plenty of trekkers out there who crave independence and would rather find their own way.) The maps and descriptions are therefore designed for people who won't rely on them! That's not to say they are useless, far from it, but with a little more care and attention they could be fantastic and this would be a truly wonderful guide. As it is, I found its limitations very frustrating.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended, 17 Sep 2003
This book serves as a good general introduction to Morocco and it's trekking areas but I cannot recommend that anyone relies on it to guide them on a trek or to find water sources. At least for the area that we visited (the Jebel Sahro) the maps and descriptions were useless to the point of being dangerously misleading. The route was described only in terms of small-scale features rather than the large-scale togography and it almost seems as if the author did not navigate himself through this area at all. By all means use the book to plan your trip, for this we found it very useful, but I then recommend leaving it behind and navigating using topographic maps only.

This book is comprehensive to say the least. It even goes so far as to tell you the best way to descend the scree fields on Toubkal, exhilerating indeed! Read more
