5.0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly & packed with info, 5 Dec 2000
I heard about this book when in India on my way to Nepal and it was highly recommended to me. It is a lot more user friendly than other guides as it has som very good sketch drawings of the trails and the estimated times are pretty much very accurate. Also forewarns you of the impending gradients as you progress along the trek - very useful to have when you want to know whether or not you have a hard day's trekiking ahead. I really loved this publication and would strongly reccomend it as a guide, by itself, to one of the most awe inspiring (and toughest) treks i have done - The Annapurna circuit i December and heavy snow!! Fun eh!!

3.0 out of 5 stars whats updated?, 9 Dec 2006
By David Davies - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A few friends and myself did the Annapurna circuit this year, and can highly recommend trekking in this region.

Currently roads are being built to Manang and Muktinath. This road building has been going on for some time and is changing the path in many areas, however it is not mentioned in the guide book, it is difficult to see how a book updated in 2005 could have missed this. In some places the route changes on a yearly basis so I do not expect the guidebook to be completely up to date and in these cases the maps in the book are an excellent way of getting your bearings, but such a major development as a road, and the impacts of the road should not have been missed. The road development will change trekking in the region, when traffic starts flowing the classic Annapurna circuit will be changed, new routes will have to open up to keep away from the roads and the guide books will have to be completely rewritten.

Other examples of where the book is not up to date, almost all the ACAP checkpoints are not in the towns where the book shows them to be. In Ghandruck the book highly recommends visiting the ACAP headquarters, however the Maoists blew these up several years ago. These changes should have been in the latest revision of the book.

However this is probably the best guide available, a friend had the Cicerone guide, this gave excellent route descriptions where the route had not changed since it was written, but was completely useless at the many points where the routes have been changed.

Overall I would recommend this guide book, but use it with caution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the LP option!, 1 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This book is still not perfect but FAR BETTER than the Lonely Planet Trekking in Nepal. I did both the Annapurna Circuit (sanctuary) and the Base Camp and could not have done it with the detail in the LP book. Without a guide ... the maps and details are invaluable in this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good complement to LP Guide
This book has a good deal of useful info. However the route descriptions are extremely detailed - rather like the Wainwright books to the Lake District of England. Read more
