Product Description

Synopsis

The worldwide boom in mobile communications has transformed the cellular phone into a universal information and communications tool. With the advent of Wireless Application Protocol, your mobile phone can emulate a PC as a terminal for browsing information on the Internet. "The Net-Works Guide to WAP" gives you a glimpse at the potential for this exciting new technology, covering the consortia that are developing WAP, through to mobile-content issues and creating your own WAP sites. In addition to showing you the basics of 'mobile surfing', the author also discusses more advanced wireless communication issues such as: push advertising; always-on-services; proximity information; databases and dynamic content; cards and decks; language structure, syntax and delivery; major players in the market; service providers and gateways.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but misses out crucial networking issues., 23 Jul 2001
By tim.bealby@ntlworld.com (Surrey, United Kingdom.) - See all my reviews
... The first half of the title is fulfilled introducing the reader to various WML and WMLS language elements. The remaining practicalities of getting a real phone to see your WML page on your computer or web site are almost entirely forgotten.

The book scantily mentions the requirement for a web server. It does not discuss what the web server is for. It does not discuss the other components in the network between the phone and WML page. It does not discuss issues such as the limitations of the different gateways used by the mobile network providers.

The book is full of punctuation and typographical errors. Finally, the most useful component of a technical book is missing - an index!
