From the Publisher

Real Skiing
Off-piste is real skiing. The conditions are ever changing and the skiing is always challenging. With a little effort and by using knowledge and experience, you can get away from the crowds and the hustle and bustle of the resorts and lift systems. Out where it really is a different world.

Unfortunately, many skiers think that off-piste skiing is beyond them, reserved only for the advanced and experienced. They have images of the steep and deep, of narrow rocky couloirs and other such terrifying places. These places do exist, but off-piste also has a gentle side. With a little help and the right conditions, any intermediate skier can enjoy the thrill and freedom of skiing 'out of bounds' - in flattering snow, on gentle slopes, and in stunning scenery.

Off Piste … with Wayne Watson takes you away from the urban feel of ski resorts into an exciting and breathtaking new skiing world; experience the adrenalin and camaraderie produced from this sometimes unpredictable and dangerous environment.

This book is full of invaluable tips and techniques to help you deal with the different snow conditions and varied terrain found in the backcountry. From traversing to setting up for the first turn, and from fragile spring snow to the steep and deep. Also learn about off-piste procedures, etiquette and snow management. And find out how to minimise the risks and make your off-piste skiing as safe and rewarding as possible.

The author is an acknowledged expert in his field, with over 20 years skiing & guiding off piste in Val D’Isere/Tignes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good source of knowledge, especially for the uninitiated., 3 Sep 2001
By A Customer
It has taken most of us a long time to aquire safety and ettiquette off piste. The 'feeling' for the surroundings cannot be learnt from a book, however Waynes' book would give any aspiring off piste skier a big head start on this road. Much that needs to be instilled is common sense but still needs to be shown, this book covers all you would need to know and absorb. For the more experienced a multitude of tips, some found the hard way, continue the theme of 'we never stop learning'. An added bonus to those of us that know Val and Tignes is recognising the locations visually in the mind. Absorb the book, wait for the season then ski with one of the off piste schools and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide, written by an invaluable guide, 22 Feb 2002
Whether skiing off piste is, for you, a dream, a plan or a passion, this book will educate, enthuse and entertain in equal measure. The added bonus is what it reveals about the author as a person as well as guide. Those who have skied with him know that "off piste without Wayne Watson" wouldn't be the same thing at all!

4.0 out of 5 stars For serious skiers, 18 Feb 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Off Piste (Hardcover)
If you want to do some serious off piste skiing (and I don't mean skiing just the other side of the piste markers), this is a book for you. Two thirds of the book is dedicated to safety, starting out with some pretty scary stories about avalanche accidents. The most telling anecdote was of a piste skier who triggered an avalanche while crossing over to the adjacent piste. The moral I drew from this story was: don't ski down the wrong side of piste markers if you can't assess the avalanche risk.

The book covers some good solid techniques but I didn't find them that easy to follow. Perhaps it's the sparseness of illustrations? If you want to perfect your powder technique, read the "All Mountain Skier".

The author is a Val d'Isere-based guide so if you're familiar with the area, you'll love it. Most books on snow safety in English are written for the North American audience so it's nice that this is aimed more at those that ski in Europe. A good practical guide to skiing off piste.
