I visited Dumfries and Galloway for the first time last year, spending a week exploring and walking. I thought Ordnance Survey maps would be the only guide I really needed, but I soon found I wanted something extra - an expert local guidebook with walks suggestions and background information. Tom Prentice's book is both entertaining and informative, describing 25 separate walks that cover the high hills (well, at 843m Merrick is really a mountain!) but also the coast (St Ninian's Cave, Mull of Galloway, etc) and local towns (Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, etc). The text is lively and entertaining, but clear and always informative - plenty of historical detail which always makes a walking guidebook more readable than a simple 'turn right, turn left' book. There are colour photos throughout, and the maps are exceedingly clear (I ended up not bothering with OS maps apart from the hills). And despite having been published in 1995 I didn't find any significant changes brought about by the passage of time - although I should add that I completed only about half of the 25 walks. Dumfries and Galloway is a quiet, charming and very understated area: it's full of fascinating pockets of history, surprisingly rugged and virtually empty hills, and Prentice's book is the perfect guide for any visitor prepared to stretch their legs and go exploring.
