Whilst it is always a joy to return to 'The Thirty-Nine Steps', when read in conjunction with 'The Power House' Buchan's development as one of the classic thriller writers of the last century becomes clear. 'The Power House' paints a vivid picture of pre-Great War London amongst the political and legal elite of the time. Although the pace may not always match the ever-tense atmosphere of 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' the attention to developing the characters in the story compensates more than adequately. The way that the cautious character of Leithen is contrasted through his comradeship with Chapman, the bluff, fearless Yorkshire Labour MP is a delight to read. The story sets the tone for many of Buchan's classic books written subsequently - 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' being a clear sign of how Buchan was developing the art of spinning a great tale, keeping the tempo up throughout. It is difficult to ever imagine becoming bored with the classic tale of espionage in London, and amongst the Galloway hills - if only the many films of the book had the sense to stay true to the thrilling climax written by Buchan. In summary, a treasure of a book for both Buchan devotees as well as the casual reader in search of a good story.
