Product Description

Book Description
This evocative collection of photographs of the Clyde and its people is a unique chronicle of the life and times of the river - from the halycon days when resorts like Rothesay, Largs, Ayr and Prestwick were a playground for the people of Clydeside, and passenger steamers like the Waverley plied their trade to and fro across the Firth, to the dark days of the Clydeside blitz, and the golden age of shipbuilding, when battleships and ocean liners sailed majestically down the river and into legend. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover
From uncertain origins in the Lanarkshire hills, the waters of the Clyde wind their way down to the sea, running through places whose names have come to be known the world over as a result of their association with the great river.
In the upper reaches, Bonnington Linn and Corra Linn inspired Turner and Wordsworth and provided the setting for Sir Walter Scott's 'Old Morality'. Further downstream, the river became the focal point of Glasgow's spectacular industrial success, as the shipbuilders of Scotstoun, Govan, Linthouse, Clydebank, Port Glasgow and Greenock made "Clydebuilt" a byword for quality. The great days of shipbuilding may now seem like a distant memory, but the names of the yards - Stephen Connell, Fairfield, Barclay Curle, Yarrow, john Brown, Denny, Scott and Lithgow - and the achievements of those who created some of the world's finest ships, are etched in history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conveys the spirit of The Clyde, 27 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This book is packed with photos from the archives of "The Herald". It really gives a sense of the communities along the Clyde and their history. Anyone who has a personal history of, for example, holidaying in Largs, taking the Dunoon ferry or growing up along the Clyde will enjoy this nostalgic and yet very real book of photos. I found it to be very evocative of the place over time. It captures the spirit of the place and the people and their relationship with the river in many ways, including the great ships built in the now quiet shipyards.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book that captures the true spirit of the Clyde, 25 Nov 1998
By A Customer
The River Clyde may not be the widest in the world, or the longest, but it has a history that is as evocative as any of the greats. For some, it is the ship building years that mark it out, for others it's the rememberance of journeys past 'doon the watter' on childhood holidays. But regardless of personal memories, this book will be sure to stir the heart of anyone who has a connection with this great river.

Robert Jeffrey and Ian Watson have created a beautiful book which depicts this world famous river in all its guises. The words and images combined have captured the true spirit of the Clyde, to be released with every page that's turned.
