Synopsis
As the last ship on the yard's books goes down the slipway, the future looks desperately bleak for Pagan's, a proud and long-established Clydeside shipyard struggling to survive during the Great Depression. This novel focuses on the experiences of two men whose lives are irrevocably changed by the yard's closure.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hidden jewel in the Scottish crown, 22 Dec 2005
By A Customer
As Scottish as the swirling rain over the Glasgow streets, this is a very engaging and thoughtful novel about Glasgow, second city of the empire, during the grim days of the 1930's Great Depression.
Following the lives of a shipyard owner and a lowly riveter,Blake creates a highly readable account of this great Northern city during one of its bleakest periods.
Football matches, crowded pubs, busy thoroughfares, criminal courts and the ever present ribbon of life that is the River Clyde produce a fascinating document of urban Scotland in the Thirties.
