5.0 out of 5 stars Gatherings from Spain, 29 Jul 2007

Even today this guide to Spain gives a lot more information on the real country than any other guide book to date. I doubt it will be bettered.

3.0 out of 5 stars And this is the digest version??, 10 Nov 2009
By Mr. R. J. MacRae "jayhawk2000" (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews

I was a student of English literature at university, so I have an ear for the florid language from this period. The author certainly has a distinctive voice and the book is easy to read once you become attuned to his observations.

Unfortunately the sarcasm and clever phrases that I've seen quoted elsewhere and which drew me to read the book are hard to find amid the intense depths of description the reader is forced to wade through. It becomes wearisome in places (he was obsessed with horses, for instance, and witters on and on about them for many pages) so I would not be interested in attempting the full-length version.
