Product Description

Product Description

TB infects about one-third of all humans worldwide. In 2005 alone, 9,000,000 people were diagnosed with the infection and over 2,000,000 died. About 40,000,000 people have become latently infected with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis during 2005. About 80 per cent of these new cases will have occurred in just 23 countries and more than half are allocated to five nations: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria. 14,500 cases were identified in the US alone in 2004, Southeast Asia has the largest number of cases and in Eastern Europe and Africa the incidence of TB is rising. This is due mainly to the spread of HIV/AIDS, the breakdown in global health services and the emergence of Multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis. The purpose of this book is to increase understanding of TB and MDR-TB (Multidrug-Resistant TB), highlight the importance of compliance and raise awareness of this growing world-wide epidemic. The lack of information available on TB for sufferers and the recognition of the importance of having information became the author's motivation for writing this book. The information in this new edition is written in simple terms, which makes it easy-to-read and understand. The text is very comprehensive. If one has tuberculosis or one wants a good understanding of TB and those living with it, all the information is available in this publication. The book explains what happens and why to those with TB. Medical facts, statistics and data are also provided to help readers put the TB epidemic in perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars How little we all know, and how shocking to find that out!, 25 Feb 2009
As a dual qualified nurse (RGN & RMN) working within mental health with clients who have illicit drug and alcohol problems, homelessness, poverty and severe mental health issues I thought I was fully aware of the issues of TB. Then, i became very unwell and was admitted to Hospital and diagnosed with TB. How shocking for me, both as a professional and personally. I then discovered how little I did know about this illness. This book gave me an intorductory but shocking insight into how big an issue TB is worldwide, but also 'normalised' my experience and helped me focus on getting well through the long hard months that were to follow. A must intorductory read for all health professionals and anyone unfortunate enough to 'be in the wrong place at the wrong time' and contract this very preventable infection.
