Product Description

Product Description
This field guide covers the area of the Gambia, a country which is very popular with a large number of birders. The Gambia shelters many migrants from the Western Palearctic, from September to April, as well as having a significant list of resident West African birds. The guide also covers Senegal, which almost entirely surrounds The Gambia. The colour plates depict 570 species - virtually every species recorded in The Gambia - and the text covers every species on the Senegambian list, as well as a few which are likely to turn up in the future. In total, over 660 species are described in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The indispensable birders' book for The Gambia and Senegal, 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I've just returned from two weeks travelling in Senegal and The Gambia, doing quite a bit of birding there. This Field Guide was simply excellent: the plates are of a very high quality, the distribution notes straightforward and helpful, and the descriptions of behaviour brilliant. Frequently, and almost uncannily, when trying to identify a bird, the exact behaviour and habitat we were observing was described in the text, helping precise identification greatly. The book was a pleasure to use and nothing else I have see for the region comes close; general West African guides will simply not do the job half as well as this book does. If you are going to The Gambia or Senegal and are interested in birds, get this book; you will be delighted that you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for travellers to The Gambia, 26 Mar 2005
One of the best Bird Guides I've seen, not just for The Gambia. The beautiful colour plates - featuring 500 birds - are beautifully, and clearly, drawn. These are located together at the front of the book so that you can quickly browse for the bird you're trying to identify. Detailed descriptions of behaviour, habitat, breeding, etc are kept separate at the rear of the book, but both sections cross reference eachother. This clever format makes it much easier to track a bird down than other books.

For a bird watcher, or twitcher, this guide is required reading (unless you want to fork out another £30 odd quid (and a few more pounds baggage weight) for "Birds of West Africa".

If you're a more casual bird spotter/nature lover going on holiday to The Gambia, then you're going to see lots of birds, even sitting by the pool or on your balcony. If you go out into the country you'll see even more. This guide will greatly enhance your holiday as you'll quickly learn the names of the most common birds and can experience the thrill of spotting something a little rarer. Without the book it will just be "the one with the red bits-this" and "the bird with the sparkly feathers-that".

You should also be aware that this book can be very expensive in the Gambian book/tourist shops.
