5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction To Plath's Life & Work, 6 Jan 2004
By Alison Dale (Manchester UK) - See all my reviews
This is one of the best introductions to Sylvia Plath that I have read. Elaine Connell writes in a clear, coherent and eminently understandable style which is refreshingly different from much contemporary academic style.

Placing Plath in her historical context as a woman growing up in post war and Cold War America & she discusses whether we can define the poet as a feminist or not. Connell demonstrates the duality of much of Plath's work revealing her as a writer whose work demonstrates the conflict between work and home which so many modern women have experienced.

This book is ideal for students doing Plath at A level or for first year undergraduates. Poetry often presents problems for students this book should help remove many of the difficulties which they might have with the work of Sylvia Plath.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone wanting a good introduction to the actual poetry, 24 April 2000
By A Customer
For anyone wanting a good introduction to the actual poetry of Sylvia Plath, I would thoroughly recommend this book.

As a teacher I have tried a dozen or so different books over the years. Many give a good insight into the lives of Syvia Plath and Ted Hughes but few actually get to grips with her poetry. Students seem to make more sense of Plath more quickly with this book.

Elaine Connell introduces students to the some of the important issues such as whether Plath was a feminist, how Plath pioneered the use of everyday things such as motherhood and cutting her finger in her poetry.

Although the book is an introductory work it deals with some of the deeper issues surrounding Plath in an interesting and readable manner...
