5.0 out of 5 stars Five Amber Beads, 17 May 2006
By Dr. Maria Chamberlain - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Amber is a metaphor for a window into the past; five amber beads out of the many which must have formed the necklace is apt for the survivors of the selective genocide from which few remain. Aronowitz weaves fact and fiction and past and present to tell his family's holocaust story. However, this is not yet another holocaust book. It is a poetic and deeply felt "deposition of facts before it is too late for memories". I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From family legacy to a novel, 24 April 2006
By Ffion (Wilts,UK) - See all my reviews
This moving and tender account of a true family history, using actual holocaust diaries in the text, which have been skillfully interwoven into a thought provoking contemporary novel. Apart from being a really good read it is also beautifully written. It is a book that I look forward to re-reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Reader, 4 April 2006
By A Customer
This is an immensely moving book rendered with an honesty that makes it compelling from first to last. Taking an actual Holocaust diary - which has its first publication in this novel - and wrapping it in a fictional architecture is an extremely risky enterprise. The extraordinary thing is that it succeeds brilliantly, due in large part to lack of sentimentality and absence self-obsession with which the narrative is handled - a homage to the painful matter-of-factness of the diary itself. Although written in a muscular plain style, the writing is bold enough not to shy away from flashes of - often breath-taking - floridity which stand out all the more by virtue of the tone of the diary itself. Although a debut novel it has a stark maturity and is in many ways A Portrait of The Artist as Old Man. Perhaps the strangest thing about the book is the fact that, despite its subject, it is not exclusively - or perhaps ultimately - a Jewish book. To this reader at least it appeared to be a meditation on absence and, although the Z word was fittingly absent, perhaps fleetingly Zen in its approach. To say that it's a treat runs the risk of belitting both the book and its subject matter - but I'll run the risk and say it anyway.
