4.0 out of 5 stars Cumbrian maverick on top lyrical form, 16 Mar 2004
John Murray is Cumbria's best kept secret, along with chocolate covered Kendal Mint Cake and arty punks British Sea Power. Murray writes with a visceral wit, laying bare the north's frozen souls as bizarre and beguiling. Jazz Etc, which made the Booker Longlist, returns Murray to his hash-hazy, jazz-jammed student days. Falling for the talented guitarist Fanny Golightly, Murray then hurls us into the earlier peasant life of a Portugese musician who eventually displaces the narrator in Fanny's affections. There's also some wildly funny Cumbrian-Italian dialogue to revel in, as the writer's youth is revealed in a befuddle of comic quirks.
First timers might care to make Murray's acquaintance via the slightly less specialised John Dory, or Radio Activity. But with critics comparing him to Flann O'Brien and Rabelais in equal measure, you may as well just jump in and test the (nuclear) Cumbrian water yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis from back cover, 5 Nov 2008
Meet Vince Mori, an Italian Cumbrian, and a very passionate ,
man. Vince is obsessed with woman, the clarinet, and his trad jazz band, The Chompin Stompers. His romantic son Enzo is obsessed with only one woman, his brilliant Oxford contemporary, the world-famous jazz guitarist, Fanny Golightly. Unfortunately, single-minded Fanny only has eyes for a Portuguese musical legend called Toto Cebola. A novel reavealing the cosmopolitan music scene and the Eternal Triangle.
