4.0 out of 5 stars A history of the American Left, 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer
One aspect of the book which I found fascinating was Bookchin's view of the American left and how many of the participants of the American New Left contributed to it demise. This is a personalised history. The book begins with a brilliant description of the the immigrant community in New York and the socialist beliefs held by the poorest sections. Bookchin charts his own rise as a communist organiser within this community. Then he moves away from communist ideology towards anarchism and libertarianism. The part of the book on the sixties in the US are interesting as he describes the rise of the SDS and how competing ideologies within it (Moaism, Trotskyism, and Black Nationalism) undermined its potential as a open and democratic revolutionary organisation. Since I am from the UK everything that Bookchin talks about is not clear, and his political attack on the rise of Black Nationalism, in particular the Panthers is confusing. Of course the book deals with the ideas for which Bookchin is renowned. For me it is a major contribution to re-building the egalitarian project after the defeat of the left in the Reagan/Thatcher era.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insights on radical history and future prospects, 3 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Echoing Rosa Luxembourg in 1916, the founder of social ecology foresees an ineluctable choice in the new century between libertarian socialism and barbarism. The nature of this nascent barbarism can be seen in the exponential industrialization of the planet, new state authoritarianism to cope with approaching ecological crises, the degradation of individuality as the corporate economy colonises all aspects of personal life, and the loss of the ability to conceptualise alternatives. Resistance, to Bookchin, means first turning to history, to recover the 'legacy of freedom'of popular revolutionary movements since the English Revolution which sought radical forms of political and economic democracy and the free time for ordinary people to become active citizens (see the historical trilogy, The Third Revolution). A long-term revolutionary, Bookchin advocates the formation of Left study groups to "rebuild radical consciousness" and eventually act as agitators for direct, face-to-face democracy within their own communities
