Book Description

A History of the Island of Mona
--`Including an Account of its Natural Productions, Druidical Antiquities, Lives of Eminent Men, the Customs of the Court of the Antient Welsh Princes, etc.', by Angharad Llwyd (1780-1866).

From the Publisher

This is the first new edition (since its publication in 1833) of the prizewinning essay for the Beaumaris Eisteddfod of 1832.

The book includes a new introduction by Philip Steele, illustrated by a carte-de-visite photograph (from the Denbighshire Record Office) of Angharad Llwyd and the unabridged text of her first edition, including its illustrations, biographical sketches, lists of the island's bards, sheriffs and members of parliament, and a full account of the Beaumaris Eisteddfod, together with an index.

Angharad Llwyd's readable and informative History takes us on a tour of `Mona' as it was in the early decades of the nineteenth century, recounting the history of the island--so far as it was understood at the time--along the way.
This title is published as the companion volume to the up-to-date and comprehensive guidebook to the island, "Môn Mam Cymru: the guide to Anglesey'.

From a review in the `Transactions' of the Anglesey Antiquarian Society: "This edition brings to those interested in the history of Anglesey, in all its aspects, a rich resource which has been hitherto relatively difficult to access and it is a welcome addition to other volumes published by Llyfrau Magma about Anglesey."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Victorian woman's account of Anglesey's history., 1 Jul 2008

(REAL NAME)
An antiquarian book full of interest to those who love Anglesey has now been reissued in a new edition and is once again available. "A History of the Island of Mona - including an Account of its Natural Productions, Druidical Antiquities, Lives of Eminent Men, the Customs of the Court of the Antient Welsh Princes, etc.", is the first reprint since publication in 1833. It was written by Angharad Llwyd: her prizewinning essay for the Beaumaris Eisteddfod of 1832.

In delivering the adjudication, one of the judges claimed: "Who that examined the Essay...and saw its correct and beautiful representation of the Island of Anglesey, but must be excused if he indulged in a flight of fancy, and imagined the author to have soared to the heights of Snowdon itself, to have plucked a quill from one of its own eagles, and to have described with it, in language of incomparable accuracy and taste, all the varying characteristics of the island."

Angharad Llwyd (1780-1866), from Caerwys in Flintshire, was the leading woman of letters in Wales in her day. She was not a writer of fiction or poetry, but was inspired by Welsh literature and history. She loved to pore over genealogies, with their resonant naming of names, and she researched the pedigrees and heraldry of prominent Welsh families. She was fascinated by the history of her native land and was already well versed in the matter of Anglesey (her mother was from an Anglesey family) before starting her Beaumaris Eisteddfod task.
Angharad Llwyd's readable and informative guide takes us on a tour of `Mona' as it was in the early decades of the nineteenth century, describing the story of the island - so far as it was understood at the time - along the way. Introductory sections refer to agriculture and livestock, fisheries, quarrying, copper mining at Parys Mountain and coal mining on the Cefni marshes. The variety and self-sufficiency of local industry in the early nineteenth century impresses us in the age of globalised, services-based economics. Angharad describes ports and harbours, ferries and rivers, roads, dwellings and population. The main text is in the form of a remarkably detailed gazetteer. This is all absorbing material for the modern reader, written in the age when the Menai Suspension Bridge was still a novelty.
The 256-page book includes a new introduction and the unabridged text of the first edition including all its illustrations, biographical sketches, lists of the island's bards, sheriffs and members of parliament. A further fascinating feature is a very full account of the Beaumaris Eisteddfod, which was attended by the thirteen year-old Princess Victoria and her mother, the German-born Duchess of Kent.

"This edition brings to those interested in the history of Anglesey, in all its aspects, a rich resource which has been hitherto relatively difficult to access and it is a welcome addition to other volumes published by Llyfrau Magma about Anglesey."
-- reviewed in the latest edition of the 'Transactions' of the Anglesey Antiquarian Society.

Angharad's book is arranged like a visitor's guide to the island and is the companion volume to the up-to-date and comprehensive Guide to Anglesey, Mon Mam Cymru: The Guide to Anglesey
