Product Description

Product Description

When Action Man first landed on our shores in 1966 he instantly captured the imaginations of British children. N.G. Taylor's startlingly lifelike photography recreates the authentic Action Man experience, with lifelike settings and those 'action poses' that we can all remember. Every detail is described fully in this authoritative text, making it invaluable for collectors and more than justifying Action Man's claim to be the "best equipped, most realistic model fighting man the world's ever seen". Focusing mainly on military uniforms, N.G. Taylor has produced a wonderful compilation of photographs of the "best equipped, most realistic model fighting man the world's ever seen - almost a foot tall with twenty movable parts". Set in "real-life" situations, this book is designed for easy reference and is a must for the collector and entusiast alike.

From the Author

The objective of this book is to combine good quality examples of Action Man uniforms with great photography in the surroundings you would expect the figure to be in.Over five years in the making this is a painstaking piece of work that will appeal to a variety of readers.

Published in a handy hardback format over 115 different uniforms are featured in c300 photographs. Each uniform has a front and back photograph, with a close up to provide more detail. There is a Quartermaster section with all the accessories in each set, plus a special features section. The text runs to over 40,000 words.

I got a lot of enjoyment in making this book. I hope you enjoy reading it, appreciate the quality of the work, use it to build up your collection and remember why Action Man was so special!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, 6 Jun 2009
By SUPER GT JUNKIE (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
First, know that if you never played with Action Men in the '70s, this book won't be for you.

If you did, as I did (I had about twelve Action Men at one point), the nostalgia effect is such that almost every turn of the page is like being slapped across the face. Wonderful. So many memories, so many small details I'd completely forgotten, all come flooding back. If looking at this book doesn't make you smile you've gotten cynical and hard in your old(ish) age...

My only reservation is that it focuses almost exclusively on the uniforms and doesn't cover any of the vehicles, which, to be honest, makes it feel that something's missing. I remember I had an armoured car, a helicopter, and much more - it would've been good to see them again, too.

But thanks anyway, Mr Taylor, whoever you are. You've made someone who's just passed his 40th 'crisis' birthday very happy for a couple of hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Your Gripping Hands on This!, 13 Oct 2005

This is an excellent guide for Vintage Action Man (1966-1984) collectors and enthusiasts. It is lavishly illustrated with full-colour pictures of Action Man in all the main outifts of the vintage period. The pictures are beautifully posed using figures, clothes and equipment from the the author's own formidable collection. Each outfit is accompanied by a kit list and a brief description of uniform and equipment (there is more focus on the pictures than the words). A lovely book, obviously put together with great care by a true Action Man afficionado.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant., 13 April 2004
Having enjoyed some 270 pages of N.G.Taylor's first, somewhat pioneering book, I have no hesitations in recommending "On Land, Sea and in the Air" to every Action fan anywhere.

The glossy images, complemented by the book's rich textual style, render Mr Taylor's effort rather splendid indeed.

I can imagine that the author spent many an hour with our good friend- the almighty one!- however, I can trully say that his hard work has paid off.

A most enjoyable read, and useful for reference too! Certainly, this 45-year-old man enjoyed it, and I am sure I will for many years to come!

Well done, Mr Taylor- a fantastic insight into Action Man!
