5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Volume on Tri-ang/Hornby, 2 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Volume 2 of the trilogy on Tri-ang, Tri-ang/Hornby and Hornby Trains which covers the Tri-ang /Hornby era is every bit as good as the first volume which covered Tri-ang Railways.

It is another high quality production from New Cavendish Books and was well worth the 6 year wait since volume 1.

The tried and trusted format of the first volume has been used again and it contains a wealth of data, colour photographs and much other information on the Model Railway range produced after the merge of Tri-ang and Hornby Dublo.

Pat Hammond is the leading authority on the subject and is a collector himself. He acknowledges an immense amount of help from the present day Hornby company and ex employees of the various companies involved and has produced a volume that it seems even surprised him by its eventual size and content.

This is a must for collectors of the range and for those not fortunate enough to be able to collect. It is the ultimate reminder of all the good things that have been produced at Margate and elsewhere over the years.

It is a wonderful read for all Model Railway enthusiasts who are interested in the history of the subject whether it's the trains themselves or the companies worldwide involved in making them. Pat Hammond includes lots of other information on the related companies in the "Lines/Tri-ang" empire which will be of interest to toy collectors as well.

Although more expensive than the "average book" don't be put off by the price because word for word or photo by photo it is excellent value for money and if the subject interests you it will be one of the best value books you will buy!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! A nostalgic, fascinating and insightful work., 10 Aug 2001
By A Customer
If you were a child with a model railay in the late 1960s, the chances are that you had a set from Tri-ang Hornby. This book will transport you back to childhood, but also provide enlightment about what was happening behind the scenes to Tri-ang Hornby and its competitors in the period between Triang's takeover of Hornby Dublo - magnificent, but ultimately a business failure - and the failure of Tri-ang Hornby's own parent company in 1971. For collectors of model railway equipment, I can't imagine a more useful or more carefully researched and presented source of data. The cover price looks expensive, but for 500+ pages, all with high quality artwork, you should consider this book a bargain.

The book's core is an incredibly detailed review of ALL items catalogued by Tri-ang Hornby. Not just trains or UK items, but all the associated products and overseas variants as well. The text shows the author's enthusiasm for his subject and a meticulous attention to detail. This is not simply a boring list of products - the text has insight and contains a wealth of detail on 'what might have been.'

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and incredibly well detailed., 17 Jun 1999
By A Customer
An expensive, but beautifully presented work which lists in amazing detail virtually every product produced by Tri-ang prior to 1966. Lavishly illustrated, mostly in full colour, and almost every item listed is illustrated, not just the British prototype models, but also those for export and even the items manufactured overseas. Hammond's narrative style is friendly and enjoyable, and rarely becomes dull or repetitive. A perfect reference source for the serious collector, or a nostalgiac read for those, like myself, who do not collect, but had Tri-and railways as a boy.
