5.0 out of 5 stars For connosieurs of the unusual & macabre.., 23 Nov 2005
By A Customer
I chanced across a couple of short stories of Robert Aickmans a while ago, & was so impressed at their unique quality that I went for this mighty collection of the complete Strange Tales. I have to say Im immediately stuck by how such a genius can be largely unknown. Infact its almost as unsettling as one of Aickmans tales. He's commonly known as a writter of short horror stories, although its hard to classify many of these tales as straightforward horror or supernatural. Perhaps psychological horror. But more oftern than not these stories are frightening in their extremely strong unconcious currents, currents that are involve the acausal, sexual, elusive or downright bizzare at times. Many things are alluded to without being definate. Aickman has a real ability to draw the reader in to his ordinary everyday world, then take the carpet from under them in subtle ways.. at his best often leaving the reader frightened, confused or alienated, their existance crashing down around them. Infact the forward to this edition says these stories are more studies in alienation rather than horror. And a note on this Tartarus/Durtro edition - superbly bound as always, these are real collectors items. Maybe expensive, but as most of Aickmans work is hard to find it would be cheaper for someone after his complete stories to go for this rather than hunt down the seperate editions. Maybe his stories were too unusual for him to ever be as well known as writers in the genre, but Robert Aickman deserves to be much better known.
