5.0 out of 5 stars A true fan's reflections of true love, 25 Oct 2002
This book has got to have one of the most beautiful and charming opening chapters of any sports book around. On the plains of Kenya during VSO work, Houghton recalls how while watching animals and people sauntering past him in the heat he listened to his invaluable short wave radio to the BBC World Service. How his heart jumped when they annonced that due to bad weather most of the countries fixtures had been cancelled so they were off over to a freezing and wind-swept Millmoor for the afternoon's action.
The story then moves from the fifties to the nineties and Rotherham's triumph in the Autowindscreen Shield victory over Shrewsbury Town at Wembley.
What is wonderful about this book though is the way that Houghton captures the true essence of the love he has for his club even in times of trouble and poor performance and he positively condemns Nick Hornby for claiming to have stopped supporting the Gunners during lean periods, arguing that a true fan should always support his team no matter what the score sheet says.
This book is a compelling read for any fan of football and it is made all the more remarkable because it is about a club and town not known for the glamour and the big money of premier division clubs. The pictures the author paints of friends, family and opposing fans will strike a humourous chord with any football fan.

Don't be fooled though. Houghton takes a critical view of a number of topics within the world of football, how clubs and the people's game is run as well as some of the Millers' performances.

All that said, this book should be on the national curriculum as a means of conveying what we should view as important in our lives; honesty, loyalty and respect - and a nice meat pie at half time!
