5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional analysis of music and meaning., 26 Nov 2007
By Knud Erik Siboni "Knud E. Siboni" (Odense , Denmark) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Clark J, Connon D. The mirror of human life. Reflexions on Francois Couperin's "Pièces de Clavecin". King's Music 202, 125 pp.
In their nice mauve (mallow) book the two authors, both musicians, introduce the reader to the large gallery of persons surrounding F.Couperin le Grand: At the courts at Versailles and at St-Germain en Laye(Stuart)and at the different categories of theatres at the beginning of the 18th century in Paris. The index covers ten pages. The text is supported by 106 references; an important one is Furetière's "Dictionaire universel", all the way with translations into English.
On this background Jane Clark presents a catalogue of movements of the "Pièces de clavecin". In these efforts she has been supported by Derek Connon being as well a scholar of French. Jane Clark states herself that there may of course be misinterpretations, and the reader and amateur pianist thinks that "Le reveil matin" (Livre II, 4.ordre) is not only an alarm clock but a description of l'aurore (sunrise) as striking as that of Joseph Haydn's quartet opus 76 no.4. At the same time the reader is encouraged to play hitherto unknown pieces such as "La Florentine" (Livre I, 2.ordre)
Best recommendations.
Knud E. Siboni, M.D., D.Med.Sci. professor emeritus.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best references on Francois Couperin, 22 Dec 2007
By Jean Louchet - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As far as I know, this is the only serious existing explanation (in any language) of the often misleading titles of the harpsichord pieces by Francois Couperin. Based on extensive scholarly study of contemporary sources and history, it gives lots of insight upon the characters in Couperin's neighbourhood upon whom he got his inspiration. My only criticism is about the presentation and layout of the book, which looks too much like a cheap homemade printout from a MSword file - not quite as good as one would expect from a book with such an interesting and important content. However, this is not essential and I recommend it strongly to all harpsichord players and students.
Jean Louchet, Ph.D.
