5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Castle enthusiasts companion., 7 Jun 2004
By A Customer
This is a small unpretentious, concise and factual little volume. Also this book is quite simply one of the best books on Scottish Castles you are likely to find ("Macgibbon & Ross" is the best work on Scottish Castles, but it is a huge five volume work which costs a small fortune!) Mike Salter has compiled an account of over 240 Western and Northern Scottish castles. There is a page or so of historical text accompaning a B&W photograph and plan of each castle. The location of castles is given on a regional map, together with an ordinance survey grid reference.
This is an indispensable guide for the serious castle tourist/buff.
This wonderful little book completely over-shadows and humiliates incompetent insincere cynical garbage like "The Daily Telegraphs Castles and Ancient Monuments of Scotland" by Damien Noonan! A coffee table volume which is real excrement compared with Salter's honest admirable little book. There is so much rubbish published on Castles it is a great relief to find a book which singlemindedly does what is required, that is honestly relate a comprehensive list of Castles with photographs, drawings, plans, and history.
If you are an enthusiast of castles you wont go wrong with this little book. Perhaps the photographs are small and only in B&W but that is all you need. The book will easily fit into a large pocket, and I would heartily recommend it. I work in a Highland Castle and am familiar with many. I can assure the reader this is the book to get. It is extremely good value compared with the totally bogus pretentious snobby coffee table books which are all about massaging egos and not about furthering knowledge and genuinely enthusing the reader.
Mike Salter is to be throughly commended for this work, I think he is probably a genuine enthusiast and not some cheap hack trying to make a fast buck at you expense!
A reader in Scotland.
