Product Description
Synopsis
The first edition of this book focused on the four main movements of Twentieth Century style between 1900 and 1980: Art Nouveau, Art Deco, the Austerity Binge" of the Forties and Fifties, and the explosion of daring flamboyancy of the Sixties and Seventies. Now, at the end of the millennium, and as we grapple with virtual reality and a new nostalgia, an account of the eighties and nineties completes this seamless survey of architecture, interiors, fashion, graphics and everyday objects which has long had a unique appeal for students, collectors and anyone interested in our abiding appetite for style."

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST for design students, 20 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Bevis Hillier is the man who gave us ART DECO - in name anyway! An acclaimed 'expert' in the decorative arts, Hillier has produced a book that guides you through the influences of 20th century design. The book is academic and authoritive but unlike many design books it is not jargonistic and is an easy (and compelling) read. Dip in at your peril - you will find yourself glued to it! Not many academics would show Edward VII's custom built "Siege D'Amour" from the Chabanais brothel in Paris in their stuffy books! An ingenious design (I think I know how it worked )! Seriously this book is an excellent read for anyone interested in the design of the last century. Design historian Kate McIntyre's chapter compliments Hillier's work and brings it right up to date but there is no explanation as to why Hillier himself did not write it. If I have to nit pick, the only real failing is the lack of bibliography at the back - books are cited within the text so keep a pen and paper handy.
