5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and highly entertaining, 26 Aug 2003
By A Customer
As a 40 year-old Mancunian with an eastender for a mother I now know something of the origin of many of the dishes served up to my father and myself when I was little - pig's fry, cabbage and corned beef, rabbit pie, apple dumplings - not to mention my maternal grandfather's penchant for whelks, winkles, pig's trotters and cow heel! Better than that, I have even been able to cook some of these delicacies for myself.

This book contains great recipes for many dishes which, as Jonathan Meades recently pointed out, if given a French, Spanish or Italian name would cost the earth in a trendy London eaterie. However, through our modern, oh so sophisticated prejudice against the vernacular we turn our noses up at classics like boiled beef and carrots (have you ever tasted a piece of slowly boiled salt beef? Divine!)or baked rabbit with bacon.

The book also functions as something of a social history with fascinating asides on such topics as loan clubs, hop picking, music halls and moonlight flits. Thoroughly enjoyable!
