Product Description

Product Description

Morocco is a paradise for birdwatchers with its coasts, islands, wadis, plains, forests, mountains and deserts creating conditions that are often very different from those found in Europe. The richness of these habitats is clearly illustrated by the 452 species which have been recorded so far. Fifteen years have passed since the publication of the first edition of this book. This is a very short period in the dynamics of bird communities, but a very long period in a country that has developed so quickly. The Government is encouraging development and tourism, for example in the Atlantic West Sahara, which opens up great new sites for birdwatchers. The most important and easily accessible of these new sites have been included in this second edition, and the original 15 sites have been increased to at least 50.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical bird & wildlife travel guide, 31 Mar 2009
By D. Thomas (Devon, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very practical book, above all giving excellent directions to good wildlife sites and making clear what might be seen at each. Plainly the authors have first hand knowledge of the region, evidenced (for example) by detailed advice on site-access, and useful information on local accommodation. As one would expect from the title, its primary emphasis is on birds, but the text also mentions "Other wildlife" for many sites, and appendices list not only birds but mammals, reptiles, amphibians, dragonflies and orchids. The sad fact is that (as the authors make clear) the fauna of the region is generally in more or less severe decline, under pressure from expanding populations of humans and their livestock. On a recent brief visit, it was very noticeable that there were large areas suffering bad overgrazing, where the variety of birds was limited and their populations small; compared to the situation 30+ years ago, the changes were quite shocking. Nevertheless, there are still very interesting habitats to be seen, and special birds and other wildlife to be found, and the Moroccans are generally charming, kind and helpful.
