Review
'This book may even appeal to raeders without and interest in historical gardens. It is written in a highly personal style...Gardening successes and failures are described with humorous irony, and the txt combines philosophical reflections and sound practical advice' Country Life

Product Description
The garden at the Manor House, Upton Grey in Hampshire was designed by Gertrude Jekyll for Charles Holme, the founder of 'The Studio'. Having fallen into disrepair it has been accurately and painstakingly recreated over a period of 16 years to embody Gertrude Jekyll's original vision. It now contains the only complete restored Jekyll wild garden still in existence. The recreation was made possible by the discovery of Jekyll's original plans at the Reef Point Collection in the United States, secured for posterity by the great American landscape architect Beatrix Farrand. Rosamund Wallinger, the current owner of the Manor House, personally undertook the restoration of this Edwardian masterpiece. Meticulous records and photographs kept throughout the restoration have enabled Rosamund Wallinger to produce a beautifully illustrated and historic document. Full of fascinating horticultural details, and tinged with a very necessary sense of humour, her account makes fascinating reading for anyone with an interest in garden design and garden history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and heartwarming, 24 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I loved this book - couldn't put it down. There was so much in it - gardening, history, a way of life, fun, hard work and great pictures and text. I also found it amusing in that many of the ways of gardening are so very different from ours here in Western Australia due to our vastly different climates. It was an inspirational book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, yet somehow disturbing., 29 Oct 2005

(REAL NAME)
I review this book as a reader and as a owner of a historic house and garden myself so I come at this from 2 perspectives. As a reader I thought that this is a lovely book, with a wonderful tale of the restoration of a garden. As such very readable, highly entertaining. Having my own hassles I can relate wonderfully to it! Beautiful photographs, reasonable text.

As a gardener, however, I found the slavish devotion to recreating someone else's garden exactly, precisely, obsessively, difficult to understand. A house and a garden is an organic thing, it grows and develops with every person who lives within it and should show the marks of the 400 or 500 years it has been there. I was bemused and fascinated by someone who needed someone else's blueprint to garden, and who became obsessed with that blueprint. This is, I stress, a very personal observation - the book is certainly worthwhile, it is beautifully presented, and most gardeners will love it.

I came away from Ros Wallinger's experience beliving more firmly than ever that a garden, as a life, should move forwards continually; influenced and shaped by its past, but not forever shackled by it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 30 Jan 2009
By Scary "scaryguitars" (East Sussex. England) - See all my reviews
A well photographed and interesting book. Not presented in the normal gardening book way, but a great insight into the discovery and restoration of one of Jekyll's lost gardens. A recommended read for the historian as well as the gardener.
