5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughfull portrait of suffolk life at the end of WWII, 3 Mar 2002
By neildykes@hotmail.com (Boulder Colorado) - See all my reviews
John Appleby was drafted into the American war effort in 1945, a couple of months before Adolf threw in the towel. While Hitler fretted in his bunker in Berlin John bought an old bicycle and toured the peacefull summer lanes visiting village churches and developing a passion for brass rubbing. But this is not a book about brass rubbing! It's a book about how one man fell in love with Suffolk and it's people. It's a book about the friendships that he found and it's about how much he enjoyed the beautiful Suffolk countryside in the celebratory summer of 1945. John Appleby never returned to Suffolk and in a way I'm pleased that he never had his image tarnished because his experience of Suffolk life has all but vanished. But you'll still want to get your bike out and go for a lazy ride in the lanes after you've read this book!
