Book Description
Back in 1998, tired of the comfortable life, Lez Gray and his wife decided to make a few changes in their lives. The first involved giving up sensible yet boring careers in computing, the second saw the sale of their home and the third the unplanned production of a baby. If that wasnt enough they had also decided to build a home. This is the story of self build from the mud up lived through the eyes of a complete novice. If you have ever wondered what it is really like to self build and vicariously live through the experience, this is the book for you. Lez not only managed the work but did a significant amount himself juggling subcontractors egos with cash flows, public utilities and planning officers tantrums. Incisive advice gleamed from hands on experience is presented in an easily digestible format. This covers such key areas as project management, budgeting and hiring subcontractors, as well as specific technical work such as installing the electrical and plumbing systems from scratch .
The real value in this book however, is not so much in relating how to build your own home, but what went wrong along the way. Throughout the book Lez presents a tips and a "lessons learnt" summary to help the wannabee self builder avoid the same pitfalls. Principally this book is about empowering ordinary people to have a go for themselves, by first looking at what level of involvement is appropriate, guided by facts and someone who has been there before.
From the Author
In reading this you have already put your foot squarely on the path of at least thinking about building your own home. If you have ever wonderd what it's like to decide for yourself what your home should be like, as opposed to the homogenised designs 'spec' builders think we should like, you are in the right place. If the the thought of taking up the challenge of putting your own mark on the design of your home excites you, you are in the right place. I don't claim to be a builder, tradesman or any sort of associated building trade oppo. What I do say is that building your own home is potentially within the reach of everyone. Unfortunately both the building trade and lack of encouragement from the main players makes this a less than inviting option for most. However with a little research, tenacity and a lot of imagination you will be amazed how far you can go.
At the beginning of the build I could probably wire up a 13A plug and build flat pack wardrobes. By the end I had installed the complete electrical and plumbing systems as well as undertaking the overall project management. Whilst this level of involvement is not neccessarily the norm, in undertaking so much of the work I learnt things. More importantly I learnt where the potential for errors was at its highest. These lesson I pass on to you.
I hope by reading my story you might take the next step. Enjoy the book.
Lez.
