Product Description

Product Description
Photographer Nigel Dennis spent two years in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, during which time he was afforded opportunities for photography which few others have enjoyed. The photographs provide insight into the private lives, behaviour and habits of these curious creatures, and capture them in many moods and in a wide variety of daily activities. It is accompanied by an informative and extremely readable text which documents the life of these animals in their desert habitat, examining their behaviour, social make-up and adaptation to an often hostile environment. Meerkats display almost human qualities, which make them the favourites of many wildlife watchers. This guide will stimulate and satisfy readers, allowing them to share in the world of one of Africa's most endearing animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for meerkat-lovers like me!, 4 Sep 2000
By A Customer
If you are not familiar with meerkats, check them out at your local zoo, they are very social creatures and entertaining to watch. After seeing them you will probably want to know more about them, so get this book. David Macdonald is an authority on meerkats and previously did the BBC film Meerkats United and an article for Smithsonian magazine. He took the famous picture of a group of meerkats standing on a mound, looking like a group of people. In this book, he wrote 30 pages detailing almost everything about meerkats from how they survive in the desert to how they raise their young. The remaining 70 pages of the book contain beautiful pictures by Nigel Dennis, showing not only all phases of meerkat life, but also their environment and neighboring species. I have been looking far and wide for a book on meerkats and this one fits the bill nicely.

4.0 out of 5 stars meerkats, 3 Jun 2009
By G. I. Forbes (edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Meerkats (Hardcover)
This book on meerkats, which are not cats, but a type of mongoose, derive their name from the Afrikanss for marsh cat but this is a misnomer as these animals never go near water or marshes as they live in the deserts of southern Africa.
The book which has no chapters is in facr divided into two.Pages 8-31 deal with the characeristics of the meercatincluding a)general description b)socialability c)terratorial activities d)foraging habits e)reproduction birth and infancy and f)dispersal and adaption to life in the desert. Each section is well written and descriptive.
The second part of the book pages 32-104 is a series of pictures of meercats in action with suitable descriptive captions.
The pictures in general are good but a number are repetative and the endless brown backgrounds could have been altered with a little imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb!, 16 May 2009

This review is from: Meerkats (Hardcover)
Wow! I've been waiting for a couple of months for this book to be in stock, and it was well worth waiting for! Absolutely stunning photography ( not just of Meerkats ), the written word tells you so much about these most adorable of little creatures, their lifestyle, habitat etc. A real must for any lover of Meerkats ( is there anyone out there who doesn't love them?).A great price for a great book, even if you aren't interested yourself, buy it as a gift for someone who is. They will love you for it!
