When the life of one horse has been so documented for over half a century, few would believe that yet another publication could hold its own in the shadow of its predesscors. 'Phar Lap', by Geoff Armstrong and Peter Thompson, is a collectible addition to the set.

When Isobel Carter, Michael Wilkinson, and biographers Jan Wositsky and Margaret Benson published their tributes to Phar Lap, the cast and crew of the 1930's drama were alive. Yet where the personalities of the day are dead, Armstrong and Thompson have failed little in innovation and magic. Their recount of the story of Australia's favourite galloper has as much spark to the novice eye as the aforementioned, with every detail of mainstream knowledge regurgitated, referenced, illustrated.

But the gem of this publication is a present for the pro. 'Phar Lap' documents apparently new evidence on the death of the horse in the US, and the attempted shooting on the morning of the Melbourne Stakes, 1930. The attention to meticulous detail is astounding, from illustrious archive to little-known fact. Its only flaw lies in the scepticism of new evidence and the sensational.

The combined effort of these authors is a stunning tribute to Phar Lap, accurate for the historian and passionate for the romantic.
