A very user-friendly, readable guide, 23 April 2004
I brought along this book for a month-long tour of the state, and itproved invaluable. Tons of information, all expertly detailed andarranged. In particular I like the numerous "background boxes" whichprovide extra, useful and informative information on a multitude ofsubjects - from the Texas twang to the pick-up truck. Wonderful! Anendlessly entertaining, as well as extremely useful, book. If it has a weakness, I'd say it is the room rates quoted foraccommodation. Most places we went to were priced wildy out of line withwhat we read in the book. It is curious to see that Lonely Planet's main rival, the Rough Guide, still has not considered Texas worthy of its own guide, which I findextraordinary considering the sheer size and diversity of the state. Ifthe Rough Guide ever do get their act together on this one, it will bevery, very hard pushed to match Loney Planet's.

Cowboy kitsch and more ....., 12 Nov 2000

This was an excellent book to plan a Texas trip for three friends meeting up from different parts of the world, and accomodating varying interests and personalities. Plenty of info on where to find everything from cowboy culture, Tejano music, country & western music, the famed Texas BBQ, Mexican & Native American art, tarot card readings, outlet shopping, Texas Hill Country trails & activities, dude ranches, missions, as well as the usual lot on history, sights & accomodation. If I took one star off the rating, it is because I did have to get onto the internet for additional detail on certain points, but without the guidebook, I would not have had the platform from which to start the search. Would definitely recommend it .....

Excellent, simple, clever and appropriate advise that enabled me to have a great time in Texas. Houston seemed a uninteresting place to visit before the book, but reading its witty passages and tips helped make the most of the city. In fact I'm still trying to lose the weight! (Texas portions are to die for!!) A great read, a must have book for all of Texas. Yes, ALL of it!! Take this book with you, it will prove indispensable on your trip to Texas - the Holy Grail of the South West!!
