These days you might expect to find all the information you need on the Internet. However, the bulk of what you find on the net is put there by the big commercial hotels and holiday package companies. Smaller places for independent travellers are still difficult to find without a decent guide book. The Lonely Planet series has never let me down. This one is quite slim and seems at first not to have much in it, but in fact turned out to have just what I was looking for. The reason not many small independent hotels are listed is because there aren't many. The town maps are quite good but island maps are poor. Pick up a free road map at the airport tourist information if you are intending to explore, or get a proper map or specialist guide for walking or cycling

There's been a marked improvemnent since the last edition of this guide! The restaurant recommendations are particularly interesting with top marks given to some of the most innovative of the islands' cooks. Also seems to have been a really big effort on updating the info. on attractiomns/sights and their opening hours. All in all, recommended reading if you plan to avoid the concrete jungles of one or other of the 'Playas' and see a bit of the real Canaries.

I just got back from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Gomera and this is a brilliant guide book - really good info on transport, acommodation and my word the restaurant reccomendations were the best Notably La Cazuela in santa Cruz and El Palmar at Valle Gran Rey on La Gomera ( in my view a much nicer place than the shanty town under construction feel of San Sebastian).Highly reccomended.
