5.0 out of 5 stars the langague groups are perfect combination, 30 Jan 2004
Recently used on holiday in Slovakia, the combination of languages included in this book came in handy. As we traveled through Austria, and German is the choice langage by the majority of tourists in the region.

The pronounasion tips came in handy but think it was our interptation of these that led to funny looks and giggles, not the books fault. :)

There could have been more phrases for actual travel eg no section for Trains, but was for trams and buses (we found that they are not interchangeable). And the sports were a little outdated.... we were on a snowboarding holiday (not listed ) :) The food section was the most used and we all managed to get what we were expecting. :)

Useful travel companion, taught manners and made friends, can come again.

3.0 out of 5 stars It all depends..., 21 Feb 2004
I bought this phrase book together with the Lonely Planet guide to Slovenia.
The phrase book covers several languages (six, IIRC), which is good if you are travelling through several countries in the region, but is simply dead weight if you are only visiting one. There are only about 20-30 small pages per language, and in a number of cases, there are phrases for asking questions, but no clues for interpreting potential replies. Overall, I found little of use here that was not already covered in the language section of the guide book.
Overall, I would definitely recommend the Lonely Planet guide book series, but not this phrase book, unless you are crossing several countries.
Don't let that put you off visiting this wonderful region - everyone speaks English anyway!

4.0 out of 5 stars Central European Languages - an aid to travel, 7 Aug 2009
A really useful little book - easy to use, pronounciation aids seem to be accurate as I was understood in Slovakia.
