5.0 out of 5 stars Like Asia you get a lot for your money, 25 Nov 2001
By A Customer
It was mere serendipity that I bought this book, but by writing this review I seriously hope to encourge more of you to buy it.
The book is written codially and coherently and will provide you with many useful tips on how to see the majority of South-East Asian landmarks without breaking the bank or putting yourself in danger.

Most importantly the book does give you a choice on how to best see south east asia. as the name suggests it provides a clear and highly intelligent way to view the area on a budget, but it also gives a good descritpion of the area from a more comfortable approach. For example hotels and taxis.

The book also gives travellers tips, to help the less experianced traveller get around, because as the book constantly states, despite being very beautiful Asia is also very daunting.

Another good quality of the book is that is written by people who have actually been to te area. This is extremely beneficial as it gives you advice on the little things such as the local customs of small tribes and how much to tip in each area. because of this you are more likely to belnd into the area, and not be just another tourist which will certainly make the journey more enjoyable.
In conclusion the book is well worth the money, and will give you a fantastic desciption of the South-East Asian area for people from almost all walks of life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but what everyone else is carrying, 14 Mar 2003
This book is indeed good value for money. Loads of info, quite a lot of maps etc. But that makes it thick and heavy. And in a way if falls between two stools. Despite the weight it's not really enough to get a deep cultural insight into anywhere you'll visit. And because it's the book that everyone else is using, you're likely to find the very places it recommends are full of other people with the same book. Finally it does give what seems like almost half the space to Indonesia. Indonesia is a great place but it may be better to put Indonesia in a separate volume! In some ways the best idea is probably to get individual guide books to each area/country when you're there. Alternatively we found an interesting "South East Asia Graphic Guide" book by Trailblazer which gives visa and planning stuff but otherwise almost nothing but maps, routes and where to find cheap hotels (without long reviews - just prices - mostly under US$10 and maybe a comment). Its very thin (no much Indonesia, not much writing) so is light to carry, but doesn't give much on history which you get from free leaflets and at tourist offices anyway. We have travelled before so that was great for us. But if it's the first time with a back pack maybe you should buy the LP book and carry the extra weight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Safety net, 14 Jan 2004
I traveled throughout Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore with this book in my pack. Naturally, you improvise a great deal while on the road, but I found it comforting to always have this book as a bit of a lifesaver. The most useful bits to me were the information on getting to and from each country, as well as rules and regulations for exit and entry. When it comes to where to stay, I found that some of the info needs to be updated. On the other hand, that kind of thing almost always solves itself upon arrival! The fact that it is written from a backpacker point of view makes all the difference. It is truly heavy to carry around, so we mostly used it for planning ahead and then left it in our room rather than carry it everywhere. Still, I never really felt like I'd rather left it at home, it was actually one of the more important things we had with us! My little bro is going on his first trip abroad without mom n dad soon, and I will feel a little bit safer knowing he has this book with him.
