Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
For years, Lonely Planet resisted pressure to cram the whole of Europe into a single guide. They've given in--with a vengeance. Europe on a Shoestring packs 40 countries into 1,200 pages, while still finding room to brief you on all the aspects of pre-trip preparation, from packing right to finding the best airfares.

Of course, given Lonely Planet's youthful irreverence, you shouldn't expect your grandfather's Europe. Coverage of traditional favourites like England is trimmed to make room for pocketbook-friendly destinations in Turkey, Morocco, and the Baltic states. The Eastern Europe coverage journeys beyond the tourist-thronged streets of Prague to lesser-known gems like Riga and Vilnius. Lonely Planet even covers the former Yugoslavia, as it slowly begins to emerge from its days as a war-torn no man's land. No matter where you are, the guide points out regional highlights to help you sift through its wealth of information.

As the name implies, Europe on a Shoestring focuses on "budget" travel. Fear not--you needn't resign yourself to meals of bread and water and endless nights on the floor of a seedy flophouse. The 30-odd book contributors believe it's possible to travel cheaply without sacrificing style, comfort, and safety. Though the accommodation sections focus on hostels, there are enough bed-and-breakfasts and guesthouses to keep you a safe distance from rowdy spring breakers, if you so desire. Similarly, the entertainment sections offer everything from pubs packed with rowdy Australian backpackers to the finest theatre, opera, and ballet in the world.

If you want to take on only a part of the continent, you're still better off with a less comprehensive guide. But if you're interested in exploring St. Paul's Cathedral, St. Petersburg's Hermitage, and everything in between, this book gives you all you need to see Europe on your own terms. --Andrew Nieland

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for European Travellers!, 17 Sep 2001
This book literally is THE bible if you're thinking of travelling around Europe.

This summer my girlfriend and I went Inter Railing through Italy, France, Spain and Portugal and everywhere we went there was at least a paragraph covering the town we were in.

This book has to have one of the most comprehensive guides to budget accomodation - we never paid more than £25 per night for a double and yet still most of the rooms had air-con, tv, comfy bed.... these places were not scum holes but actually pretty decent, well kept places where you felt safe to leave your bags unattended.

BUY IT NOW!

Oh, and visit Lisbon... it's fantastic, especially the beach at Cascais.

5.0 out of 5 stars The backpackers Bible, 15 Jun 2002
By Paul Booth (South Africa) - See all my reviews
I'm usually a conservative but the complementary expletives I can find to describe this masterpiece still wouldn't manage to do it justive. I've interailer round europe 3 times and this book was indispensale.

It is informative to the highest level and includes information of the entire continent in surprising detail. Do your research but take this baby with you. Allows you to realy get off the tourist trail and to intract with the locals.

During my trip it wasn't worth keeping the book in the pack. It was in my hand wherever I went! Things are easy to find and the book is so systematic.

A true backpackers Bible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, whilst sometimes inaccurate., 19 Dec 1999
By A Customer
The lonely planet series of books have been a very good partner to us in our travels, however I would like say to potential buyers that this is not a definitive guide. There are errors and some information is purely opinion. Having said this, I found the guide of great use where backed up by a second source. Its weight (somewhere near a kilo) is a small drawback, but photocopying the required pages is a simple way around this. Europe on a shoestring is worth its cost for the phrase guides and peripheral information found in the back sections. It could use better maps in most situations, but we aren't buying it to cart around the city anyway. If you are only buying one book to travel Europe cheaply, it will suffice, just back up your info on those important things like airports and maps with a second source. Happy travelling.
