3.0 out of 5 stars Good on the sights but woefully out of date, 30 Nov 2004

If you are intending to buy this book for a run-down on the sights or on cultural tips , then go for it. But if you want any useful information on hotels, prices, places to eat or shopping then forget it.

The tourist industry in the UAE and Oman have changed beyond recognition since this guidebook was published four years ago and most of the 'in' places to stay such as the Madinat Al Jumeirah in Dubai and the Chedi in Muscat won't be found here.

A better alternative is the recently published Arabian penisula lonely planet book. Even though it only devotes one chapter to Oman, it is at least current.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oman & UAE made easier, 22 Nov 2004
By D. Elderfield "Commander Catsun" (Epping - UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Once again the Lonely Planet team have produced an invaluable guide to what could otherwise be rather confusing and frustrating destinations. Although the peoples of this region are unquestionably friendly and helpful, their strict Muslim culture could easily be offended, due in part to many areas being relatively untouched by the tourist trail and the foibles of foreigners. The guide ensures that you're impact as a traveller is minimal and at the same time helps you to get the best out of the interaction with these fascinating people. The Omani section probably proved the most useful, as this country, although in the process of modernisation, is taking the steps towards embracing foreigners slowly and therefore the information in this book is very accurate and 'up to date'. All of the recommendations that we followed from the book, from Dubai, through Muscat and overland to Salalah, proved worthwhile and our fantastic experiences and adventures will no doubt be lodged in memory forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars The simple delights of the Oman are revealed., 16 Dec 2001
As ever the LP team have been there and smoked all the hookahs, giving a great outline to any planning and yet the detail once you are there.
The Oman and UAE come over as mixed travellers paradises of cityslickers and rugged inhospitable landscapes of varied emotions. Clean and calm on the outside but emotional and turbulent overtones underneath. A good read for anyone wanting to mix tax free havens, the best clubbing in the middle east and the calm of the desert...or any one of those on their own.
