Note that this book was published in 2000. That means that a lot of the route details have changed due to road improvements (they weren't very good to begin with), and you can pretty much discard the accomodation section as lots of places have closed / better ones opened and the prices have definitely all changed.

We ended up discarding our copy half way round NZ as it simply does not allow for any deviations from the prescribed routes.

Peddlers paradise is much better
