Product Description

Product Description

Australia's isolation from the rest of the world has led to the evolution of many unique species of mammals. This book introduces all of the major groups including egg-laying mammals, pouched mammals, placental mammals, introduced mammals and marine mammals. There is emphasis on those species the amateur naturalist and nature-lover is most likely to see. Information is organized simply, with individual species or group entries describing key characteristics such as where they are found, food requirements and behavioural habits. Each entry is accompanied by a photograph and, where appropriate, distribution maps. A key feature of the text is the "gee whiz" sections, which answer many of the most commonly asked questions about why animals do what they do, revealing interesting facts and providing practical information for the amateur enthusiast. In addition, fact panels interspersed throughout the text highlight surprising snippets of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent introduction, 26 Oct 2009

(REAL NAME)
This book is a great introduction to mammmals in Australia (all the Green Guide series are excellent in this respect).
All the groups of mammals are covered, and the book is packed with general natural history information and curious facts about these creatures. Species information is limited, but perfectly adequate for gaining a good awareness of the diversity of ammals found here, and for identifying what you have seen.
Highly recommended for begninners, or anyone interested in Australian mammals.
