Product Description

Product Description
Remember that fantastic tour you went on? What made it so memorable? In most cases it would have come down to the skills, knowledge and qualities of the guides. This book aims to provide guides with the skills and resources to create experiences like this each time they lead a tour. In creating these positive experiences, guides need to manage a vast array of intrinsic elements and relationships that occur within every tour. The interpretive approach to tour guiding is an effective way to focus on these efforts. It is an approach that is gaining increased recognition as an integral component of the way forward for learning and development programmes for guides. This book provides accessible content and uses a variety of concepts, techniques, activities and case studies. Learning tools found in each chapter include: activities to help you develop and extend your understanding of the content and material covered; special focus studies that provide real information on guiding for a range of situations; and a wide range of references, sources of further information and websites for further study.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Guiding has now been fully explained, 18 Jun 2004
By B. Rabotic (Licensed Guide, 'Belgrade Sightseeing') - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a book that any tour guides or directors should carefully read and then again re-read. Firstly, because it is so far from all those 'How to become tour guide or how to run the tour guiding business' silly titles offering nothing but the very basic and for most of guides non-useful, ordinary descriptions of the nuts and bolts of the tour conducting. Secondly and more important, John Pastorelly who authored this book offered an accessible and comprehensible to anyone content aimed to provide guides and tour directors with all the skills to create travel experiences for their customers. The book is brimming with various concepts, techniques, case studies and learning tools. Even the most experienced guides will be surprised when reading the text. Simply, many of us who have been working in this field for more than 20-25 years (i.e. having a really extensive experience) can now see that our more or less standard interpretation of sights and usual communication with customers need desperately to be improved. The book explains how this can be done in the most effective way. Knowing how to enrich the travel experience of our customers, we'll enrich our own professional experience and satisfaction as well. Thank to this excellent book, the hidden secrets of what we usually call Art of Guiding are now explained, lightened and exposed to all professional and volunteer guides.
