5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, moving, easy to read, 29 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I was drawn to this book as one interested in Scottish history in general, and in the history of the fishermen of the borders in particular. I expected a rather dry read, but was delighted to find an enthralling account of the neglected story of disaster, courage, and determination which took placxe in the town of Eyemouth during the 19the century. Historians, genealogists, and anyone who enjoys a good read will enjoy and learn from this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars eyemouth, 4 Mar 2009
By G. I. Forbes (edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This excellent book deals with the history of Eyemouth(a fishing village in Berwickshire on the east coast of Scotland)from the 1500s to the 1800s.
Although the main emphasis is on fishing leading to the disaster of 14 Oct.1881(Black Friday)other subjects covered include border raids, witchcraft, tithes, religion and pilotage.
The storm of 1881 resulted in 19 of 41 boats in the Eyemouth fishing fleet being sunk with the loss of 129 lives plus 60 lives lost and a number of boats from neighbouring villages.
This disaster is very well documented giving the names of all boats lost and the names of all men who died.
Thereis an excellent bibliography while the pictures are outstanding.
