5.0 out of 5 stars Scotland in eyes of a Polish traveller, 14 Feb 2009
By Olga A. Baird (Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a record of a travel through Scotland in 1820-1824 of a young Polish nobleman Krystyn Lach-Szyrma - well educated, curious, attentive and friendly. It is wonderfully written, and full of interesting details.
The book is accompanied with the biography of Lach-Szyrma, well selected illustrations and notes. It is pity that there is no names index.
It can be recommended to everybody who researches Polish-Scottish-British-Russian history and relations in the 18th-19th centuries, and to everybody who likes Memoirs.

4.0 out of 5 stars From Charlotte Square to Fingal's Cave, 13 Sep 2009
By Bernard M. (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This is a fascinating account by a highly educated Pole of how he found social life in Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland, Scottish farming practices and trades, and the Scots who he met at a time when Edinburgh in particular was widely held to be a Mecca for such as he. Generously and appositely illustrated.
