Product Description

Review
""Her descriptions of sixties life and fashion, and the angst of teenage years, are priceless.... Although Valerie the teenager disappeared, the little girl within her so obviously remained. This is evident in her atmospheric drawings, and the hugely descriptive quality of her writing."

Product Description
'Initially I wrote Green for my three children who were regularly entertained by tv, videos and computer games. In my childhood I had entertained myself for free. I thought I would just write about six pages of things I did when I was young, but the narrative needed some background and some description and it somehow just grew and grew into Green. So join me in an adventure back in time, and run with me up the strath, listen for bird song, smell the lowers and feel the confusion, the stubbornness, the sadness but mostly the fun of being a child in the country. Taste what it's like to be young again!' This autobiographical account of childhood in the '50s and '60s centres around Latheronwheel, a small village in Caithness. Brimful of anecdote, it is neither slushily sentimental nor dreamily nostalgic, but an evocation of country life and a child's relationship both with adults and nature. Green also covers subjects like education, religion, animals, snow, sea, sunshine, family, monsters, bitter cold, biting sea breezes, indecision and black despair. It is a child's view of the world - a child who despises adult advice, a child who is sensitive to nature, a child who is still green.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Lost World, 16 Jul 2002
By E. Garrett (Aberdeen, Scotland Great Britain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Val Carr's childhood, described so sensitively in 'Green', was a brilliant way to learn how to be an adult. Growing up in Caithness she lived life directly and not through someone else's pictures or moving images as most young people do today.

As a grandmother, on my grandchildren's behalf, I envy her close-up experience of the sounds, the sights and the smells of nature. There was time to study what was around her and try to make a child's sense of some of the more extraordinary adult behaviour.

The subtle use of language in 'Green' and the quirky drawings throughout the book suggest that the exceptional adult, Val Carr was probably an exceptional child as well, but what she experienced was there for all.

You'll enjoy this book as a good yarn but also as a memory of what many of us have lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, beautifully grafted., 19 Feb 2003
By A Customer
I initially bought this book because my grandmother was born in Latheronwheel, my mother in a nearby village, myself Wick, and I thought it would be nice to have out in Saudi Arabia, where i reside. However, what i had not expected was such a beautifully written novel. Her prose is lovely, rich and descriptive, describing nature to the full. You don't have to be from this part of the world to appreciate it as the language draws the reader in and we see all through the author's eyes. It's not just about latheronwheel, it's about the bounty of nature, life, death, childhood, innocence lost and much more. An appreciation of life and what it is to be alive. Truly wonderful.
