Product Description

Product Description
An in-depth, highly illustrated, examination of the first Waffen-SS unit to be formed, from its initial role as Hitler's bodyguard, through the battles it fought in France, the Eastern Front and Hungary. 'I swear to thee, Adolf Hitler, as Fuhrer and Chancellor of the German Reich, loyalty and bravery. I vow to thee, and to the superiors whom thou shalt appoint, obedience unto death, so help me God.' - SS Oath of Loyalty SS-Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, the second in a series of books on the divisions of the Waffen-SS, is an in-depth examination of the first Waffen-SS unit to be formed, the SS-Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. The book explores the background to the unit's formation, including its origins as the Fuhrer's bodyguard, the men it recruited, the key figures involved in the division, and its organisation. The book outlines the unit's involvement in the fall of France, and its service on the Eastern Front, from the invasion of Russia, the battle of Kharkov, and the defence of Warsaw, to the fruitless attempt to relieve Budapest. Illustrated with rare photographs, and with an authoritative text, SS-Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler is a definitive history of one of Germany's top fighting units of World War II.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ACE book, 17 Jan 2003
This book concentrates on the first SS division, the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (SS Bodyguard Regiment Adolf Hitler). The book is divided into 11 parts
Foundation, Organisation, Blooding, France, The East, Kursk, Cherkassy, Normandy, Ardennes, Last Throw and Key Figures.

Foundation tells you of the origins of the SS, a brief scan over Hitler's joining the NATZI party, the emergence Of the SA From the Stabswache (headquarters guard), Henceforth to become the SS. The SS Loyalty oath;
We swear to you, Adolf Hitler,
Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor,
Loyalty and bravery. I vow to
You, and those you have named to
command me, obedience unto death.
So help me God.

Organisation - Tells the reader of the Recruitment and training methods applied, racial ideas, training routine, the composition of the division, uniform, weapons, personnel and equipment.

Blooding - At this time, Leibstandarte was only at regimental size, this chapter Focus's on the invasion of Poland in which the regiment took part.

France - For the first time, several SS regiments would fight together as a division, this chapter runs through the regiments actions during the conquest of France.

The East - This chapter starts with the episode of Greece, The initial stages of Barbarossa, Hitler's diversion from Moscow to the Ukraine and back again, the cruel Russian winter, numberless counter-attacks.

Kursk - The chapter focuses prior to, during and after Kursk, from the re-capture of Kharkov, the critical waiting period before operation citadel, the great tank clash at Prokhorovka, to the defeat of citadel.

Cherkassy - After the debacle at Stalingrad and Kursk, the pocket of Cherkassy is often forgotten. 75,000 men were trapped, Hitler sent in Leibstandarte to rescue them, but resistance was too much.

Normandy - The Division had been badly mauled in the east and was sent to France to re build in time for the expected allied invasion. It shows how OKW (German high command) were caught unawares. Also it describes how the actions of one man can change big things, as Michael Wittman helps thwart the allied advance to Villers-bocage, and the fraught attempts at holding Falaise.

Ardennes - The famous winter German offensive of 1944/45. Shows the role of the Leibstandarte as one of the chief forces available, the massacre of 80+ American prisoners.

Last throw - In an attempt to save his last source of oil, Hitler launched operation spring awakening in Hungary. It shows the Germans tactical prowess enabled them to temporarily gain the advantage before the soviet superiority overwhelmed them.
Key figures - shows the history with the Leibstandarte of;
Sepp Dietrich, Joachim Peiper, Michael Wittman, Theodor Wisch, Kurt Meyer, Wilhelm Mohnke, Otto Kumn,

The book also shows the division's order of battle, Lineage, War service, the names and numbers of all 38 SS divisions, Waffen SS ranks and their English equivalen
