Product Description

Product Description

Extracted from the book, 'Reminiscences of Sport in Grimsby' published in 1912, this is the story of the development of football in a small provincial town during the late 19th and early 20th Century. Well-written, it is an immensely readable and humorous title which remains a surprisingly relevant commentary on the world of football today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some things never change!, 31 May 2004
By R. P. Sedgwick "Grim Rob" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is recommended reading for any football fan, simply because it helps explain how the Football League came into being and the origin of a lot of the modern rules of the game - both on and off the pitch. There's also loads in there for the historian interested in ordinary life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in provincial towns.

From a Grimsby perspective, the book traces the years when the club was formed, entry into the Football Alliance (to become Division Two), the 2nd Division Championship year of 1900, and relegation from the league in 1911! The brilliant thing about it is that is was written by someone who was there, rather than by an anonymous author several decades later.

The financial problems which almost continuously afflicted the club (what's new!) show just how precariously Town have clung onto their existence for 125 years. Unfortunately Grimsby can no longer hold summer archery tournaments to help balance the books! Also anyone who thinks football hooliganism is a modern thing will be found wrong if they read this book.
