4.0 out of 5 stars Inertias and steriles, 11 Mar 2004
By Seamus Sweeney "reader" (Dublin) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A fascinating little excurstion into a world most of us will never see. Not any prison, but The Maze, the most apt name for any prison I know of. This is the world of maximum security, of "inertias" and "steriles" (spaces designed to detect movement and immobilise prisoners respectively), a Borgesian maze of vistas that are all exactly the same. Very interesting essay by Louise Purbrick on the history of the maze and of the ideas of penological design that underlay it. Purbrick manages to avoid any bias in her essay, an acheivement in itself. She is particularly strong on the central irony of the history of The Maze - a prison built to help end special category status for paramilitary prisoners itself had to be a special prison. And it became the place where the special nature of these prisoners was confirmed more than anything else.
