5.0 out of 5 stars Intensely fun romp, 4 Oct 2000
By A Customer
A great romp, the London scenes done with great relish and the African adventure by turns hilarious and heart-rending, the historical flavour is brilliant and really brings to life the period. The language and characters are excellent, and more importantly it's brilliant fun too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jungle Adventures and Cliffhangers, 24 Jul 2006
By miss waspy (edinburgh Great Britain) - See all my reviews
It's great. Maybe it helps to come from Scotland but his chapters devoted to the Scottish and their borders and highlands are as good as any I've ever read and show a rather nice ear for the old way of speaking.
I loved the story on lots of levels, written in the cliffhanger style adopted by Dickens, the mixture of modern vernacular within an older, more formal style of narrative works really well and from start to finish it's chock full of hilarious and tragic interwoven storylines. I read it on holiday when I pick books I think might need some application on my part but this book is effortless and a very worthwhile read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ripping read, 8 Oct 2007
By Didier (Ghent, Belgium) - See all my reviews
What a feast this is! High adventure in exotic places (you'll excuse me for calling the Scottish Highlands exotic), with a host of incredibly funny characters, and all of it in a language so rich it'll have your ears buzzing. A times it reminded me of the Flashman-novels, at other times of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, but in the end this is a unique book in its own right. If I were allowed to take 5 books with me to a deserted island, this would be one of them. Enjoy! ;-)
