5.0 out of 5 stars ....the land of the free...., 2 Sep 2006
I have recently finished school in America and even more recently moved to the UK. I was looking for a partically short story titled "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and had asked around at local bookstores. One shop clerk was very helpful and told me he knew for a fact it was contained in this book. I couldn't find it anywhere but here. I had read "The Lottery" many times in school and for whatever reason it was one of the few that stuck with me. This story plus the many others make this book a great read. It's not one you sit down and read cover to cover, it's one where you open the cover and ask "What looks interesting today?" If you like short stories this is the book for you!!

2.0 out of 5 stars The Granta Book of the American Short Story, 15 Sep 2009
Was disappointed with the condition of the book. Description stated Good condition, but clearly is not. The book is water damaged and is just barely satisfactory. :-(

3.0 out of 5 stars American Short Stories, 29 April 2009

This was selected by our teacher for the 6-week extension course of the W.E.A. literature class I attend. Twelve of the stories were selected for their authors' variety of approach - they are certainly causing some animated discussions! I have not yet read any of the other stories - the course is still in progress and I need to stay focussed. Those reading from this anthology should expect to be entertained, challenged, shocked, puzzled and amused, judging by the stories we have read. They certainly demonstrate the spectrum of both male and female American short-story writing styles.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Granta book of American Short Stories
For the short story zealot this book is a must with a good cross section of established and new proponents of the art of short story writing. Forty short stories. Great value.
