If reading is the suspension of disbelief, and you are in the mood for it, then this extremely dark tale of obsession and deception offers an unusual and highly intelligent take on office life - and death.

Strictly for adults, the characters are neither likable nor heroic, and if the plot has a milieu then it is tragedy: to say more would risk tipping you off as to the ending.

Although the "serial killer in mental game of cat and mouse" theme is one of wearying modernity, at least this serial killer isn't the standard Hannibal Lector genius/Devil steretype, and Fiona herself may be as steely as any private eye, but still the author does a stand-up job of presenting both the female and male viewpoint of obsession/obsessed with balance and insight. Given the limitations of cast and outcome, the story is a meaty read on a weighty subject.

All in all then, not your average genre-feeding stocking filler but an unusual and, if you can relate to it, worthwhile exploration of the successful, intelligent thriller niche. The author is to be applauded for his courage in exploring our darker recesses for us. Too bleak for five stars but definitely worth more than three. Read it and make up your own mind!

The book did a good job of getting into the thoughts of a stalker and his perversions and it was a good plot. However, the explicit sexual content content of the book detracted significantly from the storyline. I can get this type of writing from a cheap trade paperback. The editors of Granta Books are known for publishing new trends in fiction. They dropped the ball on this one.

Hmmm. To be honest I really can't decide how I feel about this one. It was definitely a page turner as I relly wanted to find out 'whodunnit'. Unfortunately, my own pathetic guess at a plot twist would have satisfied me more than the rushed, confused ending. I didn't really like any of the characters and, despite being about a stalker/rapist/killer, did not find it spooky at all. Also found some of it a little too graphic for my stomach! Dewspite all this, however, I do think I quite liked it!
